In the summer of 2009, when I was in the summer between seventh and eight grade, I would check out a book from the library called The Clique and my life would never be the same ever again.
I was hooked on that series. I was obsessed with what was going to happen next with Massie and Claire. I was making my mom drive me to the library every other day so I could get the next book in the series.
I’d always liked reading up until that point but reading The Clique Series was what really made me fall in love with reading. The Clique Series was the first book series that I was ever obsessed with reading. I could not and I did not want to put these books down.
The first Lisi Harrison book I ever bought was Revenge of the Wannabes. This was before I bought books faster than I could read them and at the time, I was 13 and had no money. I think my mom actually bought it for me. So the fact that I wanted to commit to buying a book from an author after only having read the first two books in the series was huge.
The very first Clique book I got to read new in the main series was These Boots Are Made for Stocking. I was on spring break the week that book came out and I made my mom drive me to the book store to get it the day it came out. I finished reading it like three days later. (Same applies to the other two books I got to read in the series right as they came out My Little Phony and A Tale of Two Pretties).
But it wasn’t just The Clique I fell in love with. I reached a point where I finished all the books that were out in the series, I wanted more of Lisi, so I picked up The Alphas Series. It was pretty special to me because that is the very first book series I ever read as it was coming out.
People judge some of her books, claiming that they teach girls to be shallow, materialistic and to be mean to each other. That’s not at all the case with these books. If that’s what you’re pulling out of these books, you’re missing the whole message. I learned from The Clique that yes, even the pretty and popular girls feel like losers sometimes. That being in the in crowd isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. From Alphas I learned that everyone has a talent, you’ve just got to find what it is. From Monster High I learned to embrace who I am. Mostly, the thing I pulled most from reading Lisi’s books is that I love reading. I’d liked it till then but those books were what really lit my spark.
I wanted to and I still want to read everything this woman writes. I’ve read every one of her books and her blog posts. I’m super excited that her next book is supposed to be a chick lit adult novel.
So if by some chance you’re reading this, Thank You, Lisi. There was a time where in middle school where Massie, Kristien, Alicia, Dylan and Claire were the only ones there for me. They were my escape from the world.Thank you for helping my imagination grow with not just The Clique but everything you’ve written. You’ve influence me not just as a reader but as a writer. My writing style has a clear influence from you and that I am very proud of. Thank You again because I don’t know what else to say.
